Arthur's Pass

Arthur's Pass in the South Island Arthur's Pass in the South Island

Arthur's Pass, situated in the South Island of New Zealand, is a small township nestled within lush, dark green beech forests at an elevation of 2,427 feet (740 meters) in the majestic Southern Alps. It serves as a popular base for exploring Arthur's Pass National Park and is traversed by one of the few roads that cross the South Island.

Renting a car in Christchurch and driving to Arthur's Pass will reward you with breathtaking views of this grand mountain range. The scenery, best described as majestic, showcases the incredible geological history of New Zealand. The Southern Alps were formed from ancient seafloor uplift and are composed of sandstone and mudstone, both of which are relatively soft rocks. The mountains, therefore, erode at a rate nearly equal to the tectonic forces uplifting them, creating a unique and dynamic landscape. Vast scree fields blanket the slopes of the massifs, adding to their dramatic appearance.

Additional glacial sculpting has carved out immense, scree-filled river valleys. Some mountains possess such steep inclines and unstable surfaces that no vegetation can take hold, giving the impression of enormous man-made quarries.

Once at Arthur's Pass, you can venture into the national park for an unforgettable hiking experience. The Avalanche Mountain walk, starting just behind the town's information center, is a challenging 6 to 8-hour loop. It ascends sharply up the mountain's side to its peak before descending via Scott's Trail. You can choose to complete the entire hike or explore sections at your own pace. Along the way, you'll traverse native forests home to the vibrant Kākā and parakeets, with magnificent waterfalls enriching your journey.

The initial hour of the hike involves sections of rock climbing, taking you 2,000 feet above the valley floor. However, it is crucial to monitor weather conditions and be ready to retreat if needed. As you trek, you'll likely hear the loud cracking sounds of distant rockslides, a testament to the ongoing geological processes shaping the region.
